The Best Cycling Backpacks for Daily Commuting

$
0
0

Cycling to work offers a range of benefits, from providing a great way to fit exercise into your daily routine, to embracing eco-friendly transport. But to make it really work for your needs, you’ll want a trusty cycling backpack as your sidekick. So what sort of things should you be thinking about when picking your pack?

Keeping the weather at bay

Commuting by bike offers no easy escape for your gear if the skies open and rain or snow descends. So picking a pack with trusty water resistance is important. Keep an eye out for features such as water-resistant materials and zippers, roll-top closures, welded construction, and included rain covers. In most cases, water-resistant bags will do the job just fine. But if you want that extra bit of reassurance, you can opt for a completely waterproof pack if you think you’ll need it.

Chrome Industries

Useful organization and quick-access pockets

The degree of organization you require in a bag will obviously depend on your specific setup and personal preferences. However, the chances are high you’ll at least want quick access to keys, a wallet, phone or other small essentials. So check whether a bag you’re interested in offers quick-access pockets. Having interior organization will also be handy for preventing the contents moving around while you’re pedaling hard. Plus you’ll be able to easily reach items with suitable pockets on hand. Interior pockets located high up are useful for keeping small and fragile items away from the bottom of the bag and crush zones. And if you need to carry tech, look out for padded laptop or tablet storage.

Carry comfort

When you’re commuting, you want to be focused on the road, not on the load on your back. Features such as a sternum strap and waist belt help stabilize the load and keep the pack close to the body while leaning left or right. And a well-ventilated back panel will go a long way to keeping you comfy too (especially in warmer climates). If you’ll be carrying heavy loads, look for a pack that offers more padding in the back panel and shoulder straps.

High-vis safety features

The more visible you are on a bike to fellow road users, the better. Reflective detailing on a bag will help increase your visibility, especially if the pack itself covers reflective clothing and you need that added boost. For enhanced safety, also look out for attachment points where you can secure bike lights to the bag.

best-bike-backpacks-for-city-commuting-safety-features

Street to office suave

Any bag you’re taking to work should look suitably appropriate in that environment. If you have a more casual work environment, you can be a bit more flexible when it comes to the bag’s aesthetics. But for more formal settings you’ll want stylish and low-key aesthetics that blend in well. Clean silhouettes and muted colorways such as black, gray or navy will help the pack transition more easily between a range of environments.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack Review: Drive By

The carry world has a lot of small brands making exceptional gear. But trying to find such carry brands in Scotland? Unfortunately, in the past, you’d be hard-pressed to do so. That is, until a small Glaswegian brand decided to step out into the unknown, in the hopes of creating something world-class. A little brand that could hold its own on a global stage, while celebrating local craftsmanship and materials and a fusion of function and form. That little brand is Trakke, and they’ve come a long way since their humble beginnings. That journey has involved a natural evolution in their design, ultimately resulting in the Bannoch range. Taking inspiration from a WWII fabric but built for modern-day use, the Trakke Bannoch Backpack aims to embrace diverse carry needs through versatility, sustainability and durability.

Suffice it to say, I was eager to put it to the test…

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Who It Suits

The adventure lover who wants a grab-and-go carry option for day hikes, overnight trips or urban sightseeing. The commuter who wants work-friendly style and functional organization for their EDC and work tools. Seekers of the elusive all-rounder who want one bag for work and play.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Who It Doesn’t

With its versatility there’s not a lot of people this bag wouldn’t suit in some way. But to dig down into specific scenarios and style preferences, if you’re into tactical aesthetics then its more heritage-inspired vibes may not be for you. And if you’ll be outdoors for an extended period of time, summiting mountains or embracing multi-day treks, you’ll want a pack dedicated to those tasks. Also users in hot or humid climates might want a more breathable back panel. I haven’t used the pack in particularly hot environments, so I can’t comment on how well it fares, but you won’t find any air flow channels or breathable back panel mesh here.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

The Good

You can’t talk about this pack (and Trakke in general) without talking about the material choices. Trakke have made a name for themselves through bags that combine beautiful and durable materials with excellent craftsmanship. And the Bannoch is no exception. However, it arguably ups the material appeal with its Salt & Pepper canvas. A truly lovely material that looks stylish and offers a soft handfeel but is tough and weather-resistant enough to embrace the wild outdoors and lashing rain. Inspired by Swiss Army WWII fabric, the material is woven by Halley Stevensons and features a blend of cotton fibers and stinging nettles.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch

But Trakke don’t just stop at one layer of weather protection. The dry-finish waxed canvas lining provides further protection from the elements, while also making the pack’s contents more easily distinguishable thanks to its bright orange colorway. Some people may not be big fans of the color, but personally I dig it.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

So, the important question. Does it stand the weather test? After enduring hours of Scotland’s belting rain, I can confirm yes, it really does. I purposely left it outside for two and a half hours in what can fairly be described as torrential rain. Even after a particularly solid drenching to the exterior, the inside of the main compartment remained dry. Bonus? The exterior Salt & Pepper canvas dried quickly, right as…well, rain, overnight.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Using quality British-made materials is a big part of Trakke’s design ethos and they’ve spent a lot of time sourcing British suppliers. Is this local sourcing a cheap option? No. But Trakke are about great quality, sustainability by crafting bags that will last through years of demanding use, and a dedication to supporting fellow British manufacturers. From the waxed canvas and webbing to the buckles and strap foam, most of the materials and hardware are sourced in the UK apart from the interior YKK zipper (and that’s only because Trakke wants the best and Britain doesn’t make a worthy alternative to YKK).

“Trakke ups the material appeal with its Salt & Pepper canvas. A truly lovely material that looks stylish and offers a soft handfeel but is tough and weather-resistant enough to embrace the wild outdoors and lashing rain.”

Those top-notch materials are well complemented by excellent craftsmanship. This pack has been handcrafted with attention to detail and it shows. Everything is neatly finished off, with no uneven stitching or loose threads. It’s a bag that’s built to last, by people who take pride in their work.

Trakke

Trakke

I was lucky enough to check out Trakke’s Glasgow-based HQ in person, where I got to explore their workshop and see the team in action. There’s a great vibe about the place; relaxed but professional, if you will. Experienced craftspeople quietly getting on with the job at hand. The whirr of sewing machines is interspersed with the brief lull of a quick coffee break now and then, before it’s back to building bags designed to find adventure everywhere.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke

This pack is comfortable to carry, though for larger loads you may want to purchase the optional sternum strap for additional stability on the go. The pack also has a slim profile, making it easy to navigate through crowds and tight spaces while wearing it. Ideal for the commute or sightseeing with the essentials.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

If you’re a fan of “everything has its place” packing (which I am), the Bannoch is Trakke’s stand-out option. The pack offers the most organization options across Trakke’s range, providing a wide range of pockets to store work tools, outdoor trail essentials or weekend travel supplies. The padded laptop sleeve fits up to a 15″ device. Also on the inside, located high up for easy access, is a ‘Gask’ pocket array and a zippered pocket that’s useful for keeping valuables secure.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

On the exterior is an A4 document pocket and two vertical front pockets under the flap, as well as two side pockets.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke have also done well in creating a design that holds a lot for a bag that isn’t bulky on your back. You can use it at full volume or cinch it down more compactly for a smaller load. The wide opening also makes it easy to pack and access gear in the main compartment. And for travel convenience, the bag packs down flat and can fit inside a travel bag for use as a daypack at your destination.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

The Not So Good

I salute Trakke’s dedication to sourcing British-made materials and hardware including the Bannoch’s stainless steel buckles. They’re made from 70% recycled steel and are lightweight yet durable. The attractive buckle aesthetics also suit the overall look and feel of the Bannoch. However, I found the buckles at times awkward and time-consuming to use, especially when the bag is bulging with a larger load. When closing the buckles you need to take time to line them up correctly to secure them, lining up the shorter edge to fit through the corresponding gap.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch

While not as quick as a side release buckle or magnetic buckle for example, it’s straightforward enough if the bag isn’t full. When trying to align the buckles at an angle (for instance, with the pack slung over one shoulder), things get a little trickier, and when the bag is full it can be very awkward to line up the buckles. Opening the buckles is much easier and quicker than closing them, with a simple lifting action usually sufficing.

“I found the buckles at times awkward and time-consuming to use, especially when the bag is bulging with a larger load.”

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

The pack also has dangling webbing straps with no elegant way to secure the excess webbing on the shoulder straps or the optional sternum strap. You’ll need to add your own webbing management solutions if you want to secure it out of the way. You can also try tucking the excess behind the webbing anchoring the base of the shoulder straps or hooking the ends through the webbing on the front of the shoulder straps. Not particularly tidy but it gets it out of the way.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Trakke Bannoch

I also felt the lack of an external quick-access zippered pocket for storing items such as keys, a wallet or phone. You can undo the buckles and lift the covering flap to get to the front pockets but these are too big and reach down too low to conveniently store and access smaller items. An exterior zippered lid pocket or zippered side pocket would be a handy addition in my opinion.

Speaking of pockets, it’s also worth noting that when full the side pockets eat slightly into the main storage space. It’s not a major issue but the image below shows the interior with both side pockets full and it was tricky sliding the laptop in afterwards. So you may want to plan your packing order accordingly.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the price tag. This isn’t a negative in and of itself as it goes with the territory of top-notch materials and craftsmanship. But it’s something that will factor into your purchase decision-making process. The Bannoch Backpack costs £260 (around US$330). Do I think it’s worth it? For the quality and versatility of the bag you’re getting, yes. But that’s still a lot of money, so this bag certainly shouldn’t be an impulse buy.

Others to Consider

I would definitely suggest checking out Trakke’s full lineup to see what might suit your needs. If you like the Salt & Canvas material but want a messenger, consider the Trakke Bannoch Messenger. If you want urban/outdoor versatility Alchemy Equipment and Mystery Ranch are well worth exploring too, with pieces such as the AEL006 or the Urban Assault or Rip Ruck. Filson also offers heritage aesthetics with rugged durability for a variety of environments.

Trakke Bannoch Backpack

Verdict

The Trakke Bannoch Backpack excels at finding that sweet spot between urban style and functionality and travel or outdoor readiness. It’s a bag that plays really well in the city but can accompany you on rural pursuits and overnight trips too. Like any bag, it has its drawbacks. But with its excellent build quality, world-class materials and flexible functionality it offers great value for money. For me personally it’s the Bannoch’s versatility that makes it really shine. It’s an all-rounder that can move from work to play and urban to outdoor. Yes, it costs a lot of money and you should take your time in deciding whether it’s right for you. But if you do decide to go for it, you won’t be disappointed.

GORUCK GR2 VARIANT: YOMP-ENGINE No1

Equally passionate about outdoor pursuits and gear hacking, Neil Stevens has delved deep into the world of carry modding, spending months at a time tweaking, testing, and honing carry setups to best suit his needs. Through his blog YOMP NOTES he shares his carefully modified carry setups for EDC and outdoor use. And when it came to a rugged pack that could handle a lot of gear in a variety of settings, Neil turned to his trusty GORUCK GR2. But it needed that personalized touch to get it just right.

Discover Neil’s step-by-step process to creating his ideal GR2 setup, republished below…

THE EXTERIOR MODS

I bought my first GORUCK as an EDC MULE, I use it most days and I’ve become quite attached. At about the same time I was looking at other bags for hiking, one thing led to another and I wondered how the GORUCK GR1 would work out as a rucksack for this purpose. So, I made some simple mods to test the theory!

GORUCK GR2

TESTING THE GR1 FOR HIKING DUTIES

1. I added a sternum strap stolen from another rucksack

2. I added a waist belt also stolen from the above rucksack

3. I added a Tactical Tailor admin pouch

GORUCK GR2

PICNIC AT MINGING ROCK

I packed the GR1 with my usual day hiking gear and off I went.

A full day hike, 10 miles with approximately 20lbs of gear including food and water, the GORUCK performed better than perfect. Any issues? One! Not big enough, especially for use in winter where extra bulky clothes would be needed.

Enter the GORUCK GR2!!!

This choice would be perfect, basically the same bag (familiarity of platform) but bigger than the GR1 21L and with the extra front compartment (DIV2) that I earmarked for carrying extra clothes. The GR2 would be the chassis for the YOMP-ENGINE No1.

GORUCK GR2

ONE OF THE FIRST HIKES WITH THE GR2. NO COMPRESSION STRAPS YET BUT THE STERNUM STRAP AND WAIST BELT ARE FITTED AND WORKING WELL

GORUCK GR2

ALL EXTERIOR MODS DONE! THE COMPRESSION STRAPS PARALLEL WITH THE 3RD ROW OF PALS, VERY SHARP

GORUCK GR2, PERFECT BUT NEEDS MODS

I decided on the 34L version in Ranger Green.

Over-engineered is good, I like over-engineered, I like my gear to be as tough and as bad-ass as I will ever need. The GORUCK GR2 fits my criteria. Construction and design is better than perfect but the GR2 is built with another purpose so to coax it into being the rucksack I wanted, mods would be needed.

GORUCK GR2

THE GR2: A MULTITASKER

This rucksack was going to have to do more than just look cool while out in the backcountry. It would need to multitask and if I’m honest, I really like the clean, simple, boxy, utility chic of the GORUCK model, so although straps and buckles were needed, I didn’t want to see anything permanent, giving me the option to remove everything and field strip it back to a rucksack I could use for one-bag travel and all that entails.

GORUCK GR2

THIS WAS THE FIRST BIG TEST, 16 MILES, 35000 PEDS, 7+HRS – NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH YOMP-ENGINE COMFORT

STERNUM STRAP – ENTER THE MOLLE MONKEY

While testing the theory of using a GORUCK for an extended, cross country length of time, I used an old sternum strap. This worked great and definitely proved its worth but didn’t match. At the beginning of the project, one of my goals was to customize the rucksack sympathetically so when finished, it would look like it had just come from the factory with these features included. I would need a new sternum strap in Ranger Green to match the rest of the webbing. This was also the case for the detachable compression straps and waist belt. These I designed and Molle Monkey Tactical kindly made for me.

HOW IT LOOKS IN SITUATION AND IN USE

BUCKLES

Rightly or wrongly and I’m no buckle expert, I’ve never been impressed with the standard issue on the GORUCK. I’m talking about the shoulder strap buckles. Try as I might, I can’t find any makers’ brands on them so it leaves me to believe they are strong and great quality but no name options. But my primary issue was color and I wanted something easier to use with more charisma. I chose ITW GhillieTEX Ladderlocs in Coyote brown. A beautiful slick design with a hole for paracord, just to aid those shoulder strap adjustments.

GORUCK GR2

COMPONENT BUCKLE DETAIL

UTILITY POUCH

The GORUCK GR2 gives us plenty of pockets to organize and stash but I found, especially when wearing gloves, that the front slash pocket was difficult to use. I’ve added a small but perfectly formed utility pocket for a wallet, keys and phone etc. This was a lucky coincidence as it was a pouch that I’ve owned for years but worked just great in style, construction of materials and color with the Ranger Green GORUCK. This is a small Utility Pouch by Flyye Industries in OD green.

GORUCK GR2

FLYYE INDUSTRIES SML UTILITY POUCH COULD HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THIS PURPOSE

ZIPPER PULLS

To carry the coyote colorway through, set by the replacement buckles, I decided to remove all the exterior zipper pulls and replace with coyote brown, gutted 550 paracord. I’ve added a split ring to the left hand zipper pull for the main GORUCK compartment, basically so I can tell quickly which is left and which is right hand. As yet I haven’t bothered with this on the secondary compartment as I don’t use it as much as the main, so it’s not such a problem.

GORUCK GR2

I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY LEFTS AND RIGHTS, THE SPLIT RING HELPS ME OUT A LOT

COMPRESSION SYSTEM

I consider one of the most important assets to a rucksack to be the compression straps. I remember when they were introduced to the civilian market and thought they were a god-send! This was a really important factor when I was considering the GR2 but thought that at least I could add my own, how hard could that be? : ) So, why compression straps? Three reasons:

GORUCK GR2

COMPRESSION STRAPS AND WAIST BELT FITTED VIA PALS AND A GRIMLOC

1. They compress up space when space isn’t used

2. They compress up gear so it doesn’t swill around in the bag and therefore on your back, especially when running or moving through awkward terrain

3. Use them to strap gear to your pack. From jackets to tents, to camera tripods to a rifle

GORUCK GR2

It was key that one way or another, a compression system was made possible. Having had a good look around online, I couldn’t find a system of component straps that worked for me. Mostly color was the issue, I needed them to match the look and feel of the GORUCK model. So I designed my own and again had them made by Molle Monkey Tactical. It was a lot of fun to design this system along with the other straps mentioned and working with MMT and a month or so later, I had the straps in my hands ready to fit.

GORUCK GR2

THE STRAPS

My system is based on loops. Loops sewn into the seam of the bag that would accept the straps via a Mash hook at one end and a split bar, side release buckle at the other. This allowed for quick release, adjustment and field stripping for one-bag travel. But for these webbing loops, was I really going to unpick my beloved GR2 and sew these in myself, by hand?

GORUCK GR2

BIG THANK YOU TO THE SCARS TEAM – WITHOUT WHICH IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE

GORUCK SCARS

Then one fine afternoon, out of the blue GORUCK SCARS emailed asking if I wanted help with my water drainage grommets, something I was discussing with friends on Instagram at the time. I said yes please and asked if they could help with the webbing loops for the compression straps to attach to. Unbelievably they agreed. I think they wanted a friendly guinea pig to try the new service on. : ) A few weeks later a parcel from GORUCK SCARS arrived and what a perfect job the SCARS team had done. It all turned out as I’d hoped it would; better in fact.

(Now I was going to write about the design process here, but I think that needs a post of its own, soon).

As I understand, this is all to be part of a new service of custom upgrades that we’ll be able to request. The drainage grommets will be a standard, along with extra carry handles, ruck base MOLLE fields and compression straps. I think the last will be different to my request, as I already had my own straps. As I write this, I think the SCARS CUSTOM DIVISION (My name for it) is still in development, so I’m also looking forward to seeing what other custom features they will offer.

DRAINAGE GROMMETS

As mentioned above the SCARS CUSTOM DIVISION also very kindly fitted drainage grommets for me, X6 thereof in fact. Three in the rucksack base and three in the secondary compartment (DIV2). We all know we need drainage holes but do we know we know? GORUCK don’t include them on the GR2 and as I write, I’m not sure why but I do know I need them. In my part of the world there is water everywhere and it rains all the time, even in the summer. If I fall in a lake, cross a river or just get caught in the rain, all of which I’ve done, I know a rucksack can fill up pretty quickly and I want to get rid of that water just as fast. X6 military spec drainage grommets will do the trick fast. I know, I tried it in the shower. : )

GORUCK GR2

WITH THIS MANY GROMMETS, DRAINAGE IS GOING TO BE QUICK, QUICK, QUICK

CONCLUSION

This part of the build, the GORUCK GR2 variant is now complete, until I change it or think of something better, in which case I’ll update.

Arc'teryx Veilance Nomin Pack 2.0

I’ve always been a fan but lately, côte&ciel has been really impressing me with their packs. I love the look of the Timsah and it offers a variety of functional features as well. Two main compartments for storing tech and everyday or travel items, plus an integrated and stowable hood for inclement weather.

Mixed Works Falcon M

Mixed-Works-Falcon-M

I’m gonna go for the Mixed Works Falcon M. I already own the smaller Falcon S. I just love everything about it: 1000D Cordura, Cobra buckle, its style. The Medium version might fit my torso size better. Either that or a crazy expensive British-made leather weekender.

Fjällräven No. 21 Large

Fjällräven No. 21 Large

This is a pack I’ve been coveting…and last week finally I pulled the trigger on it! The Fjällräven No. 21 Large, which I was lusting after for more than a year. I’ve played with a lot of modern technical packs in the last couple of seasons but the concept of a classic ‘canvas and leather’ rucksack was always on my mind. And in my honest opinion Fjällräven simply nailed it with the No. 21 Large. The whole No. 21 series of packs is cool, but that full leather bottom of the Large variant is something special. There is no other pack like that! And surprisingly it’s also comfortable for day trips to the woodland, as a ‘bushcrafting and classic adventure’ pack. Just add a decent knife (like the Bushcraft Model 3 by Sargent Edged Tools), pair of outdoor work gloves (CRUD Sweden ‘Gjora’ in my case), a rain jacket, wool shirt, water and food and you’re good to go for a day in the wilderness, with an old-school flair. This is a pack with a soul; you don’t need to go technical-tactical every time.

The Stone Glacier Avail 2200 is checking all my boxes for design elements: Organization, access, compression and a capture flap/beavertail… The materials and hardware check out okay too: 500D, Xpac, Duraflex, #10 YKK. It’s got 44 reviews and those that aren’t 5-stars are 4-stars; it could be a case of the brand deleting anything lower, but damned if that’s the case. Third party retailers support the 5-star rating, too. The capacity is right around the 36L mark, plenty for a day in the wilderness, but can compress enough to EDC for the non-suit and tie crowd. It could very well be “the one.”

Got my eyes on Defy’s Defender Briefcase in Horween Oxblood Leather. Overbuilt and bulletproof but oh so good-looking with that Oxblood Horween Leather and a pair of Cobra Buckles. It’s sized just right to carry the essentials (9L) and will kindly remind you when you’re packing too much. It’s built by hand in Chicago and is that type of bag that you’re handing down to your kids. Can you even imagine the patina on this thing???

I’m currently interested in the TAD Axiom 24. I would love to check out how far I would be able to take it in terms of customizing it with all the panels, pouches and mods. I’d maybe even go so far as to see how many modules you could fit into it.

It would probably be the Arc’teryx Voltair 30! I’m planning on pushing the skiing this year a bit higher, and a bit of security from an airbag would be nice! I’ll still be gauging snow conditions before dropping but it’s for those juuuuuust in case moments!

Wotancraft Commander Camera Backpack: Drive By

$

0

Taiwan-based Wotancraft has revamped their original Commander camera backpack for 2018. Inspired by World War II era military backpacks and constructed from highly durable weather-resistant Cordura, the pack is as heavy-duty as you can get for outdoor use. But at a cost of $700-plus, it raises the question – is the pack worth the investment? After a few months of testing the revised Commander here is what I came to find.

Wotancraft Commander

Who It Suits

Photographers with an endless budget looking for a durable pack made from high-quality materials. Those who love modularity, military styling, or want a camera bag that is unique.

Who It Doesn’t

Photographers who want quick access to their gear in one main housing, fast adjustability, and don’t want to spend over $700 on a pack.

Wotancraft Commander

The Good

I found the Wotancraft Commander camera backpack incredibly unique compared to most camera packs that I’ve come across. The first thing that demands attention is the military rucksack styling and the mixed use of Cordura and leather. The combination of materials complement each other in a seamless manner. Wotancraft has nicknamed this particular Cordura fabric “Fog Camo”, which is a 500D Cordura that has heat-resistant properties and utilizes ultra-strength nylon with a waxed treatment and underside water-repellant PU coating to protect from the elements. The “fog” comes from the printed “fog-like” camouflage pattern, which is said to gradually develop “water-washed fading”, similar to Japanese raw denim. This pattern wasn’t very blatant to me as I only discovered this information while researching the bag on the company’s website. In person, the exterior shell (at least my pack) has a more vintage aesthetic and I do believe that over time it will age well and have a beautiful patina.

Wotancraft Commander

The vegetable-tanned full-grain cowhide leather has a nice look and feel. I personally like the black leather and tonal black stitching used in some sections of the pack. Over time like most quality leathers, the leather will soften and age gracefully with use.

Wotancraft Commander

The little details have not been forgotten when designing this pack, from the included “Remove before adventure” keyring to the Wotancraft-labeled hardware. Speaking of hardware, every detail was well thought out. The high-strength zinc alloy and brass hardware go well with the Cordura and leather. Bronze YKK zippers with a rust-proof coating also help complete the vintage vibe of the pack.

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

The durable construction is one of the strengths of this pack. Using a bonded nylon thread that is typically used for leather boots and saddles helps to enforce the durability of the pack when in heavy use out in the field.

Wotancraft Commander

The organization of this pack took me some time to get used to, but due to its modularity you can quickly find a system that suits your particular shooting style.  Having options and the ability to personalize your gear is always nice. Let’s start with the strengths of their system. The interior features a Velcro-compatible medical grade microfiber. The Wotancraft Commander includes a system of attachments that can be added for additional storage and organization including: a quick-draw insert, a small divider, two large dividers, a top/bottom divider plate, two divider plate tab, and a T-shaped divider. Additional accessories (modules) can be purchased separately.

Wotancraft Commander

Using their system I found myself making constant adjustments as various shoots require a variety of different lenses and gear. What I did like in particular were a couple of the optional modules that can be purchased separately and attached via Velcro to the pack. I particularly like the cord organizer / utility fastener module, which makes it easy to store a laptop power cord and cables. I also used the zippered pockets (available in two sizes) for additional storage as I connected those to the interior of the side compartments as they can fit items such as an air blower, microfiber cloth, and spare batteries.

Wotancraft Commander

Additional modules include: a battery & SD card fastener, zipperless pocket, 2pcs card holder, and lens cap holder / utility fastener.

Wotancraft Commander

The pack is full of storage solutions as there are several compartments that can house your valuable photo gear, from the main top compartment, which can hold up to two camera bodies, to two side compartments that can be accessed while the strap is still on your shoulder. A zip pocket for storage and quick access to items such as a cell phone, wallet, or keys is located at the very top of the pack. Four zip vertical pockets surround the top perimeter of the pack, utilizing all the space possible and can fit a range of smaller items. Each side compartment also has its own slot for smaller and skinnier items such as a lens cap. The front of the pack has a deep snap enclosed pocket with an elastic band at the top for items like a water bottle. To round things out eight brass D-rings can be found on the exterior. Not to be forgotten, a side panel allows up to a 15″ laptop to be stored while on the go.

The pack is full of storage solutions as there are several compartments that can house your valuable photo gear.

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

The exterior leather straps are not only pleasing to the eye, but also functional and can be configured to hold a tripod. A removable leather top handle with brass clasp hardware lets you easily pick the pack up off the ground or out of an airplane’s overhead bin.

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

I found the pack fairly comfortable overall. The two padded shoulder straps are removable, although I don’t recommend it especially with a full load as the leather straps by themselves are a bit stiff and can dig into your shoulders. The latex foam padding of the straps is as comfy as it gets with ample padding and the design helps to distribute weight evenly. The leather-trimmed edges and Cordura exterior of each shoulder strap is simply beautiful.

Wotancraft Commander

A non-slip backing on each of the strap padding helps to keep the pack in place. An adjustable and removable leather chest strap helps to stabilize the weight of the pack to the center of the body, while minimizing carry stress from the backpack. EVA foam back padding adds further comfort on your back.

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

One last area that the pack excels in is protection. The pack is fully padded and also features a built-in aluminum frame for stability. The base of the pack features a thick pad, which is removable, but I don’t recommend doing so if you have your precious camera gear inside. The back side is also padded to protect your laptop from dreaded drops. The top of the pack, for items placed in the top compartment, is also padded and secured with a zippered layer of Cordura and then another flap that securely adds one last layer of protection from the elements.

“The pack excels in protection. The pack is fully padded and also features a built-in aluminum frame for stability.”

Wotancraft Commander

The Not So Good

This is an expensive pack. The high price of the select materials used and construction can justify the cost, but for a camera pack it may be hard for some to afford.

I found that the functionality while in the field took a bit of time to get used to and comparing the overall experience to other camera packs it was one of my least preferred. While fully closed it takes more time to access the gear stashed in the top compartment as you need to first unlatch two enclosures and then a zipper. I personally prefer full openings where I can easily see all of my gear when I lay the pack down. Again, this is a personal preference.

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

Wotancraft Commander

The side openings to the compartments are nice to access while keeping your pack on you, but I often forgot which side I had certain lenses stored. I also had to remember to first turn the pack completely sideways to ensure none of the contents would spill out. This is also after having to disconnect the clasp for the chest strap.

“This is an expensive pack. The high price of the select materials used and construction can justify the cost, but for a camera pack it may be hard for some to afford.”

Wotancraft Commander

When attaching a tripod using the leather straps you lose the full functionality of the front pocket, which was one of the compartments I used most often.

Wotancraft Commander

The size of the compartments is ample, but if you keep the added top/bottom divider sections in place along with a divider to keep the two bottom compartments separate then you lose some overall space for larger items such as a long lens or flash. If you tend to keep a longer lens attached to your camera i.e. 70-200 you’ll have to really make some adjustments and in my case some sacrifice to make it fit in the pack either from the top main compartment or the bottom side compartment. For example if you want to access the DSLR and lens combo from the top you would need to lower the overall compartments lower and if you want to store it from the bottom then you must remove the center divider and in both instances you lose some organization and precious cargo space.

Wotancraft Commander

The actual adjustability of the shoulder straps on the go can be a pain. Sometimes with larger loads I may tighten straps to ensure the pack stays as close to my back and centered as possible. The shoulder straps work much like a belt and individually adjust, which means up to four places need to be adjusted with the pack off. You can’t simply tug on an end to tighten your straps similar to many traditional pack strap designs.

Wotancraft Commander

“The actual adjustability of the shoulder straps on the go can be a pain.”

Wotancraft Commander

The pack itself due to the heavy-duty nature and construction with the Cordura, leather, and brass hardware is fairly heavy. With the pack fully stuffed with photo gear and a 15″ laptop it can take its toll, especially when out in the field – as every ounce counts.

Verdict

Let’s start with the elephant in the room – the price. At $700 for the base system (not including the optional additional modules) this is not a cheap bag and not for everyone, especially the beginner photographer. Some may opt to use this budget for another lens for example.

However, the cost can be justified if you are looking for a pack that may last for a long time. This pack is more of an investment and statement piece. It has the material and style that many look for in a traditional pack coupled with the organization of a camera bag. If you’re looking for a unique camera bag with vintage styling and ultra-durable materials and price is no object, then this may be the pack for you.

For those looking for a more affordable but just as handsome camera pack, Wotancraft has other options available including the new Sniper, Ryker leather, and Trooper bags.

The Little-known World of Modern Bespoke Trunks and Cases

$

In long-gone eras, when the joys of leisure travel were reserved only for the upper class and the aristocracy, a wonderful travel category was born: the bespoke travel trunk. Luxury pieces handcrafted by only the very best gentry-approved artisans to not only carry your silks, jewels and garb from country to country but, more importantly, to show off your class, sophistication and personal brand. These were timeless pieces of pure romance and utility. But modern takes on this classic form are hard to come by. That is, unless like us, you’ve stumbled across Method Studio, UK. A small husband-and-wife team breathing new life into bespoke trunks and cases, with a class and modern take appealing to some of the world’s premier brands…

So we asked co-founder and maker, Callum Robinson to detail his greatest projects, so we can all geek out on his incredible level of craftsmanship and get a glimpse inside the little-known world of modern bespoke trunks…

Method Studio

Factory Petit was painstakingly hand-built for the world’s most progressive tannery – Ecco Leather – to de-mystify their incredible artisan craft production processes and attitudes – by bringing them out into the world.

But this is no prop.

Requiring over 4000 hours and 1200 metres of solid ash to bring to life, the series pushes the boundaries of traditional hardwood construction and draws on a wide range of long-dead details and problem-solving solutions to create a series of trunks which are agile and luxurious – but remain unequivocally industrial.

Method Studio

A truly nomadic factory

Internally the series houses a complete collection of heavy-duty industrial machinery (cunningly concealed cast iron stitching machines, state-of-the-art multi-speed polishing machines etc.) but the modular design and customised castor system allow each trunk to be moved, combined and set up by virtually anyone. Anywhere.

Method Studio

We worked closely with Ecco Leather’s skilled team – the most dedicated and imaginative leather designers in the world – attending their renowned 3-day Hotshop leather laboratory event in the Netherlands on two occasions, collaborating at the Bread and Butter fashion event and Tempelhof in Berlin and repeatedly welcoming their team to our studio in Scotland – to fully understand their unique needs, and to integrate these into what was always planned as a very user-friendly and practical tool.

The series has now been used – in various incredible setups – as far afield as Dubai, Japan and Australia, itself travelling in bespoke style in a custom-fitted shipping container, designed and tailored by our team.

Materials: Ash, organic leather, brass, steel, HDPE, perspex & acrylic

Bentley’s bespoke coach-building arm, Mulliner, produce unique personalised iterations of the brand’s incredible cars. To showcase just some of the custom options available to clients we created two remarkable pieces of one-of-a-kind touring luggage: A dramatically-scaled trunk with nesting steel doors (engraved with their signature diamond quilting pattern) and a slim, elegant attache case.

.Campaign Watch Case: Robinson Edition

Designed in homage to the classic steamer trunks and portmanteaus of the Grand Tour era, our campaign watch case Robinson edition (my family name) was a true labour of love, initially developed as a hidden detail on a watch chest for a $1M Vacheron Constantin one-of-a-kind.

Method Studio

For us owning a special timepiece is all about celebrating and revelling in the ritual; the winding, the cleaning, the admiring…it’s about personal experience. We wanted to bring the opening of the travel case and the reveal into that arena too.

Method Studio

Also, most watch travel cases and boxes are chintzy, ostentatious and glossy. We don’t like glossy.

Bridle leather straps, solid brass saddlery closures, a hardwood wrist-last to the dimensions of the client, personal embossing, unique hides for internal and externals. Authentic, tactile detailing.

Method Studio

Over the years we’ve created these cases in some truly remarkable combinations. With custom wabi-sabi leathers, scorched timber, gold-plated hardware…to name just a few. We’ve even developed custom versions in ultra-limited numbers for some of the UK’s finest bespoke watchmakers (including a double-wide edition for the unique-looking, world’s first atomic powered watch, from Hoptroff).

Materials: various leathers, suedes, woods and metals

Method X Johnnie Walker: Master Blender’s Trunks

A single oak tree from the highlands of Scotland.

Over 600 hours.

Over 1000 custom components.

In one of the most challenging and labour-intensive commissions we have ever undertaken, and working closely with Johnnie Walker’s legendary master blender Dr Jim Beveridge, the studio developed and designed a very special series of tailor-made travelling trunks; housing all of the instruments, rare liquids and glassware he requires to create the legendary John Walker & Sons™ signature blend, anywhere in the world.

Method Studio

The Master Blender’s trunks were crafted from a single oak tree, sourced from a very special secret location, on the banks of the river Spey, on the Kinrara Estate near Aviemore in the highlands of Scotland, and were very much designed to add magic, theatre, ritual and drama to the very technical and scientific blending process.

Method Studio

This emphasis on place, provenance and the importance of water is no accident. These ingredients are as fundamental to the art of whisky blending as they are to fine cabinetmaking.

Method Studio

Each of the three trunks, which – when combined – form the Master Blender’s Trunk, are detailed in beautiful Tokyo-tan organic leather, solid brass, glittering gold leaf and thick bridle leather.

Method Studio

The trunks are an invaluable tool in the remarkable bespoke whisky blending process – undertaken with only a very lucky chosen few – by Dr Beveridge.

Method Studio

Truly a humbling project, and one which again combines some of our favourite things; whisky, wood…and the dramatic reveal.

Materials: Scottish oak, brass, bridle leather & gold leaf

Developed after painstaking research into the ritual and individual process of guest interaction, the Casks of Distinction trunk was designed to add drama and mystery to the tasting and selection process of some of the world’s most unique liquids.

Method Studio

Each trunk was handcrafted at our workshop in Scotland from birch and oiled, local oak, before being traditionally wrapped in sumptuous full grain and bridle leathers. Detailing is in custom-made, gold-plated solid brass and superfine goat suede.

Materials: Scottish oak, Scottish burgundy leather, bridle leather, gold-plated solid brass, superfine goat suede & silk

Casks of Distinction: Attache

The second piece we designed and created for the prestigious Casks of Distinction programme was very much inspired by traditional British suitcase design, and the work of one of our favourite heritage brands: Globe-Trotter.

Method Studio

Ninety five percent of the components and contents were designed and custom made specifically for the project, including the precision engineered solid brass corner protectors (of which I am particularly fond). The piece houses hand-cut Cumbria crystal decanters and tumblers and allows the user to picnic in rather inimitable style.

Working closely with the design team at cult Amsterdam-based fashion label DENHAM, we created our own modern interpretation of the classic portmanteau steamer trunk. A trunk built from the finest natural materials – which, like the best selvedge denim, would age and develop a unique patina over time.
.
Method Studio

Drawing inspiration from birch-bark canoes and bi-plane wing construction, the lightweight, birch-skinned trunk contained over 600 meticulously interlocked components, all individually handcrafted from American white ash.

The piece was customised and detailed to evoke the symbolic journey of their very own Journeyman Jeanmaker – founder of Denham, Jason Denham – and featured a drop-down work surface, flexible tool straps, garment hanging space and a column of swivelling solid ash accessory carousels.

Method Studio

Using traditional woodworking joints, an elegant framework of solid ash (chosen for its flexibility and durability – it was traditionally used to make longbows and skis) was created. This lightweight skeleton was skinned with 1.5mm thick birch before being knitted together with a series of black-japanned steel engineering fixings.

Hand-stitched leather edging was added to protect the four outward edges – the only parts allowed to touch the ground due to the trunk’s unique inwardly curving form.

Method Studio

Thick leather handles, a protective flysheet of the finest Japanese selvedge denim, contrasting industrial hardware and stunning relief hand-carving from David Robinson (my father) further individualise the trunk; encapsulating Denham’s fundamental belief that: The truth is in the details.

Materials: Ash, birch, steel, iron, copper & selvedge denim

Loch Lomond Whisky – 50-year-old whisky

Acting as creative directors, designers and makers on the release of Loch Lomond’s oldest whisky to date: a 50-year-old single malt produced in the early months of the distillery’s history (1967) forced us to delve deeply into the wonderful world of rare malt whisky (it’s a tough job sometimes).

The distillery, on the banks of Loch Lomond, is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets, and is highly progressive and fiercely independent. Combine this with their ‘Never follow‘ ethos and a really special liquid, and you have a fascinating brief.

Loch Lomond opened their doors and welcomed us in from the very beginning of the process, allowing us full access and exhaustive tasting sessions. This time spent on site with their passionate team, understanding the processes, people and heritage of the place, really allowed us to get under the skin of the project and create something special. Something fitting.

There are precious few distilleries named after a body of water as opposed to a place, so we also drew inspiration from the power of Scotland’s most romantic, dramatic and historic loch.

The feeling you get when you see moonlight dancing on the water – that chill down your spine – that is what we were trying to evoke.

Each chest was individually sculpted at our workshop from solid oak, to appear to be a three-dimensional manifestation of tempestuous water at twilight. This method of randomised shaping means that depending on the maker (and his mood) on that particular day, the form and ripple of the waves is one-of-a-kind.

Method Studio

The surface is indigo-dyed until almost black, heavily waxed and brushed until smooth and silky, and lined in deboss-detailed tan leather and polished brass.

When it came to creating a miniature of the 50 Year Old (to taste) to secrete within the chest, we didn’t want to follow with an ordinary bottle. So hidden (in plain sight) within the chest is a solid turned brass vial, reminiscent of and paying homage to the unique straight neck ‘Lomond Stills’. The vial is highly polished and lined in glass.

Limited to 60 decanters worldwide.

Method for Jaguar Land Rover: Craftsmanship Trunk Series

Initially unveiled as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s luxurious craftsmanship and VIP area at the 2013 Paris Motor Show, this handcrafted trunk series was then toured extensively internationally.

Method Studio

Jaguar Land Rover is a British institution, an iconic brand we deeply respect. So this project called for a considered combination of industrial no-nonsense engineering and elegant, finely crafted and imaginative – mixed of course with true luxury and genuine Land Rover character.

Externally the lightweight handmade birch trunks were clad in specially tooled, semi-perforated Scottish leather (the same stuff you’ll find under your back pockets in Aston Martin supercars). Each was detailed with custom-engineered aluminium hardware, made in-house, bespoke edge protection and hand-stitched anthracite bridle leather straps.

Method Studio

Internally the trunks included versatile light-box elements, extensive LED ‘halo’ lighting, leather-bound presentation books, full sample ranges for all JLR vehicles and a fully integrated audio visual setup.

Materials: Birch, tooled Scottish leather, aluminium, perspex, bridle leather & steel

Hardcase (Unequivocal iPad Protection)

The Hardcase was one of the first pieces the studio ever created; designed to house an iPad in the most dramatic and stylish way possible, and to bring some of the luxurious and tactile materials I had grown up working with in furniture to the world of luggage (something we’re both somewhat unhealthily obsessed with).

Method Studio

We travelled with one of these for years and were always delighted by the response from airport security (and those guys have seen it all)!

To achieve the unique finish we soaked iron nails in vinegar, creating a traditional solution which ebonised the American black walnut (also shown in Scottish elm) without obscuring the delicate grain feature. This we combined with blackened engineering fittings, a bridle leather strap, solid brass saddlery fittings (something we would continue to use throughout our work for years to come) and a grey wool lining, to protect the screen.

Materials: Ebonised American black walnut, Scottish elm, bridle leather, wool, steel, brass
