Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack :: Drive By

Beneath the glow of a full sky of stars our two guides say a quick prayer. Cast before them is the Besakih temple nestled into the foothills of Mount Agung, the most sacred area in all of the Indonesian island of Bali. For this ascent we’re going light, fast and up a new trail. As their prayers finish and their offerings fall silently to the ground I saddle up with Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s (HMG) 3400 Southwest Pack. How does this ultralight bag hold up to 10,000’ of smoking rock?

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

Who It Suits

The HMG 3400 Southwest is geared for more experienced hikers who have dabbled with the ultralight backpacking philosophy. It’s a technical pack constructed with space-age material. This roughly 65-liter pack weighs less than one kilogram (2.1 lbs). It’s the answer for those who have already slimmed down their outdoor carry and are tired of hauling five-plus pound packs on their adventures.

The HMG 3400 Southwest is geared for more experienced hikers who have dabbled with the ultralight backpacking philosophy.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

Who It Doesn’t

New hikers and those who prefer more physical comfort while deep in the woods. In general this pack makes sense if you’ve got your gear selection and system dialed in to go light and fast. That’s not to say this pack isn’t accessible by others but the single access point to the bag’s interior, minimal design and premium price tag are easier to justify when you’re trying to shave a precious few more pounds from your gear.

The Good

The 3400 Southwest is part of HMG’s family of hard-wearing packs constructed with Dyneema Composite Fabrics (formerly Cuben Fiber). There exists a cult of HMG backpackers that swear by these packs, notably long-distance thru-hikers. This entire family is constructed with ultra-durable Dyneema – 150D to be exact for the pack reviewed. Part of the reason for this cult following is that pound for pound, Dyneema is stronger than steel, 100% waterproof (note that because of hydration ports and whatnot, the overall pack is water resistant, not waterproof), won’t stretch when it gets wet and is incredibly light. The list goes on and we’ve gone deep into it before.

It’s the answer for those who have already slimmed down their outdoor carry and are tired of hauling five-plus pound packs on their adventures.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

The 3400 Southwest gives you 55L of internal storage and another 10L of external storage. It’s the same configuration as the 3400 Windrider but has Dyneema Hardline pockets on the outside instead of mesh pockets to prevent snagging and tearing. This pack will comfortably carry 25 – 40 pounds of gear which, depending on how you pack, will easily get you by for a week in the backcountry.

The 3400 Southwest is part of HMG’s family of hard-wearing packs constructed with Dyneema Composite Fabrics (formerly Cuben Fiber).

The pack itself is really stripped down and dialed in. There’s just one interior pocket and three exterior pockets. Inside the cavernous depths of this pack there is a mesh sleeve that can catch a bladder. But while the pocketing is simple, the straps that line the pack are not. At first glance there is a spider’s web worth of webbing criss-crossing the 3400 Southwest. While being intimidating at first it means that this pack can be compressed down like nobody’s business. Side compression straps do the majority of the work and a Y strap on the top cinches down the roll-top opening. It’s also a convenient way to hold a sleeping pad.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

All this compression is a good thing because when fully opened, the 3400 Southwest is huge. Granted I reviewed the tall version but the bag is a good 1.5 meters tall. Great for when you’ve got a pile of food to take with you or a pile of down sleeping gear for cold weather adventures. Stories abound online about sleeping in this bag in emergency situations. Luckily the compression system keeps the pack manageable when more moderate undertakings are the order of business.

“…this pack can be compressed down like nobody’s business. Side compression straps do the majority of the work and a Y strap on the top cinches down the roll-top opening.

Finally the packability. Because the 3400 Southwest is first and foremost an ultralight pack, it’s got a minimal suspension system. Specifically a ¼’’ foam back panel and two contoured aluminum backstays. These backstays are removeable. When they are removed the bag can be folded down small enough to comfortably fit into a larger duffel. Great for those who don’t like to travel with an outdoor backpack or have to check their hiking bag at the airport.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

The Not So Good

With the caveat that the 3400 Southwest is a technical ultralight pack, there’s not a whole lot to dislike with this bag. Overall it’s very dialed in. That said –

There’s one access point. The 3400 Southwest can only be accessed through a roll-top opening. It’s great for keeping the bag streamlined and increasing the bag’s water resistance but can be a nightmare when you need to get at something in the bottom of the pack. There is also a high risk of small children being lost for days in the depths of this bag. It’s seriously big and cavernous.

The 3400 Southwest can only be accessed through a roll-top opening. It’s great for keeping the bag streamlined and increasing the bag’s water resistance but can be a nightmare when you need to get at something in the bottom of the pack.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

Along with knowing where not to place gear in the bag, you also need to know where to place your gear in the bag. The minimal suspension system, granted with a non-removable hip belt and sternum strap, means that there’s no heavy-duty back panel to help transfer the load from your back and shoulders to your hips. Basically heavy stuff in the bottom.

The minimal suspension system, granted with a non-removable hip belt and sternum strap, means that there’s no heavy-duty back panel to help transfer the load from your back and shoulders to your hips.

Aesthetically speaking, the compression straps required for this bag (as opposed to zippers) means that there are a lot of dangling straps that can make the bag look like it’s having a bad hair day when it’s windy outside. Admittedly not a big deal when you’re miles from any civilization but there you go.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

And the price. Although the 3400 Southwest is basically just one giant pocket, it’s one giant Dyneema pocket. And despite how easy it is to wax poetically about Dyneema fabric, there’s a cost for this functionality – $330 to be exact. But hey, there are no free lunches.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

Verdict

Without a doubt the 3400 Southwest is pushing the limits of traditional pack construction. It’s constructed with space-age material and at less than one kg with a super minimal design, makes you question how much of a pack you really need on your back. That said, there’s no getting around the fact that this is an ultralight backpack. As strange as it sounds there’s a learning curve with this bag. You don’t just throw your gear into it and run off into the woods. Your gear and how you access this gear needs to be dialed in before the $330 price tag makes sense – we’ll even say you’ll likely be a bit obsessed with shaving ounces off your carry.

Your gear and how you access this gear needs to be dialed in before the $330 price tag makes sense – we’ll even say you’ll likely be a bit obsessed with shaving ounces off your carry.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest Pack

However, if you’re ready to make that leap there is nothing quite like Dyneema Fiber for a technical outdoor pack. Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s 3400 Southwest is a seriously heavy-duty pack and one of the hardest wearing on the market. Price aside, this bag is the stuff of Carryologist dreams.

Bond-Vox HALO Carabiner :: Drive By

The Bond-Vox HALO carabiner stems from a collaboration between Mike Bond from Ti2 Design and Jesper Voxnaes from VoxKnives. Putting prototypes of this multifunctional tool to the test is guest contributor and outdoorsman Piotr Ma.

Bond-Vox HALO

Who It Suits

Any gear junkie like me. Or anyone looking for a hard use carabiner tool of extremely good quality and materials.  I spotted the prototypes in Jesper Voxnaes’ hands at Blade Show 2016. Well, I checked my $upplies and a minute later I walked away with a thinner wallet in one pocket and three prototypes in the other one – titanium, bronze and acid washed copper. So if you’re like me, you’ll love the HALO carabiner.

Bond-Vox HALO

Who It Doesn’t

People obsessed with lightweight gear, and extreme minimalists looking for uber-simple one-purpose-only keychain carabiners. Also the price at $69 might not be easily justified for everyone.

Bond-Vox HALO

The Good

Now, after a couple of months of hard use (including vacations on a sailing yacht) I think it’s time to share my thoughts. First of all it’s such a cool-looking design! It’s a bold and rather substantial piece of gear (for a carabiner). And the materials: bronze is nice, distressed copper would surely be Mad Max’s gear of choice, and Titanium is just tough and lightweight. There is a considerable difference in weight between Ti and other versions – one is great as an EDC, but the heavier two could have serious advantages if used as impact tools.

“It’s a bold and rather substantial piece of gear…”

Bond-Vox HALO

The HALO carabiner is a keyring of course…and actually you can use both the front slot and hex hole as key attachment points. After a couple of days of carry I clearly preferred the latter configuration. First of all when I snap it on my belt loop it is in a more secure position. It also gives me better access to the ‘multipurpose blade’. The blade is not sharpened of course, but it works great as a box opener, tape cutter, pry bar, scraper, flat screwdriver (rather big screws, but still), or Phillips screwdriver (when canted). Cutting through packing tape with your real keys is a big no-no, so the box opener functionality is really welcome. Glue residue on actual keys (from packing tape) attracts dirt and sand, which can destroy a precision lock in your car or home doors. Scraper and big screwdriver functionality is self-explanatory.

“The blade is not sharpened of course, but it works great as a box opener, tape cutter, pry bar, scraper, flat screwdriver (rather big screws, but still), or Phillips screwdriver (when canted).”

Bond-Vox HALO

Now the pry bar… that is awesome! Just ask yourself how many times did you try to pry something with your key or knife? I’ve seen a lot of snapped points of fine folders on various knife forums – believe me, a tool like the HALO carabiner is a much better mini pry bar. And with a length of nearly 9cm (3.5″) it’s not so small either. I was even able to pry off an old board with it.

“…you can use both the front slot and hex hole as key attachment points.”

Bond-Vox HALO

A shackle key is another big thing for me. I’m a certified open sea sailor and I went sailing with my family last July. So a shackle key which I can snap-attach to my sailing shorts is awesome. All the materials are quite resistant to sea water but I took the bronze one with me on a yacht recently to get some nice patina, which now looks quite stunning if you ask me!

“…a shackle key which I can snap-attach to my sailing shorts is awesome.”

Bond-Vox HALO

The hex driver is obvious. What I like about it is the fit – hex tools sit there firmly enough so that they won’t fall out of the socket. I can’t tell for sure but I think the hole profile is just very slightly conical, so you can even apply some pressure on the screw when using the carabiner as a lever. And at 3.5″ it gives quite some torque compared to a standard screwdriver with bits.

“…hex tools sit there firmly enough so that they won’t fall out of the socket.”

Bond-Vox HALO

The bottle opener is obvious. Sure, most of us can open a beer with virtually anything, even a sheet of paper (yes, google it) but HALO is just a joy to use and always handy. And last but not least, it can be used to hang stuff on it – it’s a carabiner, after all. It fits the MOLLE on my backpack, which is good news if you’d like to attach something like a Helle Utvaer knife, paracord, outdoor gloves, a metal cup or wooden kuksa, hat, sandals – you name it.

Bond-Vox HALO

Bond-Vox HALO

The Not So Good

Quality and innovation usually comes at a certain price and in this case it’s starting at $69, which can be perceived as a bit restrictive for a carabiner. But if you consider premium materials like Titanium and the cost of CNC manufacturing (made in the USA), design, prototypes, and of course superb functionality, I’d say the HALO carabiner is fully worth the price.

“Quality and innovation usually comes at a certain price and in this case it’s starting at $69, which can be perceived as a bit restrictive for a carabiner.”

Verdict

Yes, it’s a good design. I’m really glad I grabbed them during Blade Show recently, just in time for the summer. The manufacturing quality is great, Mike Bond of Ti2 Design really knows his job. And the Scandinavian sense of design from Jesper is both innovative and utilitarian. And what’s really great, you can order them directly at Ti2Design.com for immediate delivery. A carabiner is one of the ‘good to have around’ gadgets and if it can serve more than one purpose it’s even better. HALO is good stuff!

HoldFast Gear Roamographer Review :: Drive By

He was a sturdy unit, his fingers like bratwursts, eyes, bagged like a racoon. It was 6.30am, and the German customs clerk needed a caffeine hit more than I did. I’d just ridden my bike through the sleet and dawn halfway across Berlin to the Shoeneberg Zollamt: the widely feared and much loathed local customs house. The carry package I’d been expecting – a Hold Fast ‘Roamographer’ camera bag all the way from Oklahoma – had gotten stuck in red tape. The only way to avoid the Zollamt’s heinously long waiting times was through an undesirable red-eye visit. With a grunt and twist, bratty fingers retrieved my box from his backlog, sliced the lid, unpeeled the wrapping, and, standing dazed, muttered his first words of the morning.

“…Sehr shoen.”

Ol’ Bratty was right. This bag was indeed pretty.

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Aesthetics aside, there’s much to be wooed about Oklahoma-based carry mob Hold Fast than its watershed product’s candy factor alone. Created locally, using American labour and materials, Hold Fast is an ethical and responsibly run artisan enterprise with a focus on stylish camera-carry. Born of a sense of adventure and the view that “history is waiting to be captured and made,” designer-photographer and presumed ‘roamer’, Matthew Swaggart founded Hold Fast in recent years after a period of personal transformation. In the tradition of all good American storytelling, his brand is beginning to tell, and visually capture, some sweet heartland stories.

“Created locally, using American labour and materials, HoldFast is an ethical and responsibly run artisan enterprise with a focus on stylish camera carry.”

As part of the Berlin Muse series, HK and I have enjoyed countless Carryology adventures across the planet. Having the right gear in order to properly capture the visuals along this intrepid road has been a crucial practicality. Fresh adventures again fell on the horizon for us at the turn of last year’s winter, with more snaps and stories to grab. Toting the Hold Fast Roamographer, we barrelled out of Berlin for a 6-month jaunt to our native land: a Southern Hemispheric refresh, and a taste of home amidst the wild isolation of the Australian bush.

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Enter Normanville

With its fish ‘n chip shop, BBQ area, its population of fewer than 900, South Australia’s Normanville was about as antipodean to our Berlin existence as one can get. Five minutes from one of the most stunning, if not isolated, beaches in the area, a half hour drive from some of the most revered wine country in the nation, we set up shop in HK’s family beach house and relished in our isolated, spacious summertime surrounds. Cue kangaroos and wallabies in the wild; haunting squalls in the dark nights; ethereal sunsets and primordial alpenglow.

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

No, it wasn’t quite an adventure packed romp through a foreign land. But it proved a fine chance to collect our heads after a wild couple of years abroad. We cooked, read, wrote, took shots and rejuvenated our systems, trading our Berlin housemates for ‘Ponglord’ the family border collie; and hectic nights in the smoky bars of Neukölln for cups of tea and bed before 10. We sure weren’t in Kansas anymore (nor was the Roamographer; good thing it blended in well).

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

The Roam Test

We enjoyed countless road trips across the sun-crisped Fleurieu Peninsula during our Normanville months, and many a weekend camera odyssey through the beach and bush. We roamed big time. Marketed as a luxury weekender, the Roamographer proved its worth in the Australian rural context, becoming a worthy handler of HKs’ Canon 5D II, Fuji X-T10, and requisite lenses (keep in mind, we were probably over packing this unit – the larger size bag is best for DSLR equipment, the smaller model for mirrorless and rangefinder gear; but it speaks of the latter’s versatility that you can make room for more weighty gear if you need to).

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

“Marketed as a luxury weekender, the Roamographer proved its worth in the Australian rural context, becoming a worthy handler of HK’s Canon 5D II, Fuji X-T10, and requisite lenses…”

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

A considerable boon for the Roamographer is that it’s internal space is fully customisable. It comes with a red insert, replete with four exterior pockets, one interior document sleeve, one exterior padded iPad pocket, two removable dividers and a removable dual lens sleeve (all Velcro-able). However, if you’re keen to leave the camera kit at home, and instead cart around your weekend miscellany (like, say, your dog’s beach toys), then this bag can handle the challenge, a multi-purpose unit.

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Tough, resilient, it looked good, felt good, and the bison leather suited the sunburned Aussie surrounds to a tee. Comfort-wise, its shearling strap offered a thick layer of comfort for the shoulder, even when lugging a fat swag. So far, so good.

“A considerable boon for the Roamographer is that its internal space is fully customisable.”

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Above all, this a camera bag for the aesthetically inclined – think Oklahoma by way of Williamsburg, with enough vintage to satisfy any hipster, lumbersexual or female photo-roamer on the planet. But there’s a caveat here. From the outset, we wondered if the Roamographer’s functionality could match its lavish aesthetics. In the midst of so many camera bags on the market, few have managed to tread this fine, perilous line. In this regard, the Hold Fast wasn’t without its drawbacks.

“From the outset, we wondered if the Roamographer’s functionality could match its lavish aesthetics.”

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Firstly, the duel leather straps: they looked great, in keeping with the vintage style, but proved cumbersome to operate in accord with the hinged split-handle ‘doctor’s bag’ opening. *Access to kit became an awkward affair, and a far from speedy one. On top of this, the rounded rectangular buckles created fraying along the straps’ edges. Through the use of a straighter rectangular buckle, or a revised closing system, this wouldn’t be a problem (and might alleviate some of the access issues). Similar story with the central thumb tab – it wasn’t ageing too gracefully after the barest of use, and seemed to loosen (not great when the bag is packed with swag, and you’re under-confident that your ‘spensive kit will be sufficiently coddled).

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

*Update: A caveat ought to be added here: in hindsight, it appears we weren’t using the buckles and straps as they was designed for in a day-to-day setting. For regular use, the straps should actually be fastened back over the opening where they tuck into two rear strapkeepers. Although they proved slightly cumbersome to insert in this way, this certainly alleviated much of the functionality issue, though the point still stands about the central thumb tab closure.

The camera buckle addition on the shoulder strap gets a thumbs up – however, you need to make sure you have the right attachment on the camera (not included). At US $560 ($660 for the larger model), the Roamographer is no budget option. It’s a luxury bag, with a price to match, though it could well be justified for the visual experience alone.

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

This bag is brilliant – visually. It’s ideal for the basic photographer who enjoys a neat escape to the wilderness and wants to look good while they do it. For someone who photographs often, the central thumb tab closure system may prove a little weak. But it’s worth keeping this shortcoming in context – with a basic tweak (i.e. with a more robust central leather tab and lock system) the issue could be immediately addressed.

We really wanted to love this bag, and to a massive extent, we did. It garners praise from anyone we come across. The Roamographer is stylish and usable, with only a couple of minor functionality issues. And that really isn’t enough to detract from the fact that it’s one of the best-looking camera bags we’ve ever seen.

The Good

Bison leather: sexy as hell, one handsome beast

Spacious for the size

Customisable interior

Versatile

Unisex and inclusive

Did we mention how pretty it is?

HoldFast Roamographer

The Not So Good

Mild functionality concern with the closure system

Buckles and strap edges/finishings could be more robust

You’re paying chiefly for style

“It’s ideal for the basic photographer who enjoys a neat escape to the wilderness and wants to look good while they do it.”

HoldFast Gear Roamographer

Verdict

The Roamographer is stylish and usable, a talking piece, and something that’ll make you feel darn good about yourself. A worthy purchase.

Korchmar :: What We’ve Learned in 100 Years of Making Bags

$

Korchmar. It’s a name that’s been around the carry block. Rare it is, in this day and age, for a fourth generation enterprise to be alive and thriving, especially one that still keeps it in the family. As you’d expect when you’ve scratched up 100 years in the game, these guys know a thing or two about making bags – looking ahead to their centenary anniversary, we chatted to current President, Michael Korchmar, and picked his brain on some of the juiciest carry learnings that have propelled his family brand’s century-long success.

Korchmar

Keep it in the family

Korchmar is a family-owned, family-run deal. Michael’s grandfather, Max kicked the biz off in 1917 after immigrating to America from the Ukraine. Landing in Baltimore, he started making leather visors for automobile headlamps. Carry gear followed: for the military, then the public. Michael’s dad and uncle took over after the war, both vets – his dad, a brilliant engineer, who designed machinery to automate the production process and enhance bag quality. Michael took the reins in ’77, and his son and daughter are now waiting in the wings.

“The advantage is having someone 150% ‘bought in’ to the business for life,” says Michael. “(But) it depends on the family members, (and if they) share the creative passion to not just mass produce a ‘product’ but to create beautiful articles […] Most everything I know came from my father in this business; knowing that someday it will be yours and that you are the master of your own destiny does foster hard work and devotion […] The pressure of maintaining a legacy is always there.”

Korchmar

Ain’t always shirts to shirts

“There’s an old saying in the States,” says Michael: “Shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations.” (It’s actually an American translation of a Lancashire proverb: ‘Nobbut three generations atween a clog and clog’; or the Italian ‘dalle stalle alle stelle alle stalle’ – from stalls to stars to stalls).

In short, when it comes to family business, someone usually starts it, the next generation reaps it, and the third tends to run it into the dirt. It takes nous to baulk the inertia of nepotism: “Fortunately, I beat those odds,” says Michael. “But there’s been some hard times.”

Korchmar

Stay flexible, but stay true (and bring it home where you can)

As well as the plant in the Dominican Republic (DR), Korchmar has a thriving HQ in Naples, Florida. “One of the missions (in recent years) has been to try and bring as much work back to the US as possible,” says Michael. Staying competitive while keeping things local can be a tough deal to juggle, though much of Korchmar’s longevity comes from striking that balance.

“As well as the plant in the Dominican Republic (DR), Korchmar has a thriving HQ in Naples, Florida. “One of the missions (in recent years) has been to try and bring as much work back to the US as possible,” says Michael.”

Michael took the reins at a time when foreign competition, and cheap labour, began to pervade and transform the market.

“Everyone else in that time either went to China/Asia, or went broke, he says. “We started a plant in Mainland China between 1982 and ‘85. It just felt dirty – ‘this is not the right thing to do’.”

In 1985, (then US President) Reagan started a ‘Caribbean Basin Initiative’: “It sounded like a really cool idea to start a plant closer to home. We built a plant in the Dominican Republic (DR) in 1986, and over the course of the years it allowed us to really survive.”

By the late ‘90s there was nobody left manufacturing in a production environment on that side of the world. Shortly after 2001, Korchmar started seeing renewed interest in sourcing goods on this side of the world. By staying flexible in a changing industry – maintaining operations locally between the US and DR – they were well positioned to reap the benefits when the market shifted back to a more artisan-based, localised approach.

Korchmar

Can’t avoid hard work (nor would you want to)

“I did everything I could to avoid it,” says Michael about the family game. “Getting back to the old third generation thing, I wanted to party, wanted to have fun, and this was hard work…I mean, this factory work is not for sissies. It’s dirty, it’s hot, and I was a little more interested in trying to have fun. My father insisted I work or I didn’t eat basically. So I had to work. I got out of college, tried to go to Law school, did everything I could – I guess I did always know, I just wanted to put up a fight about it. I’m sure glad I’m not a lawyer.”

““I did everything I could to avoid it,” says Michael about the family game. “Getting back to the old third generation thing, I wanted to party, wanted to have fun, and this was hard work…I mean, this factory work is not for sissies…””

Korchmar

Family doesn’t end with the bloodline

So many of Korchmar’s artisans and patternmakers have been with the company for a generation – a cadre of 15-18 people chalk up between 27 and 35 years each. Even the Vice President started in ’77, the same year Michael took the helm. Retention through mutual loyalty is paramount: a feeling of family that doesn’t end with the bloodline.

“One of the sad things about today’s economy is that is so very rare. When I started in business it was the norm. With that said, I don’t know the ‘key’ to retention except that it seems to help when the owners actually work – I mean every day, on the floor, with the people. It’s hard to imagine why the team would care so much unless they see that the owners sincerely care […] I hope that’s why they’re here – either that or I’m paying them too much,” he jokes.

“I don’t know the ‘key’ to retention except that it seems to help when the owners actually work – I mean every day, on the floor, with the people.”

There’s more to business than money

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about in business about trying to make money – if you don’t, you don’t survive and you can’t do any good,” says Michael. “At the same time, it can’t be your only reason for being. As businesses grow and become part of operations that can only respond to shareholders, they lose some of that warmth and caring. I couldn’t go to work every day if it didn’t mean something: if I wasn’t doing something positive for the world by providing employment and opportunity.”

Korchmar

Don’t be a copycat

You can’t deny a trend in the market, but to be successful as a brand you need to improve on it. “You never try and copy,” adds Michael. “You always try and see a trend – and then reinvent to do something better. You can’t just duplicate. That’s what we tried to do.”

“You can’t deny a trend in the market, but to be successful as a brand you need to improve on it.”

Korchmar

Know your product

“Our skills are unusual – almost 100 years working with leather. We really know leather. We were able to make strides and improvements in product based on material quality. Where the marketplace was using very cheap leathers to try and hit price points, we were able to differentiate by being very pure to Max’s philosophy of only using the finest raw materials.”

From the grain selection to the actual tanning process, leather is a complex art. But in short, the grain is what provides the flexibility to the leather and thus, to a great extent, its longevity and beauty. Korchmar never uses anything but Full Grain or Top Grain leather on its products – i.e. the outermost layer of the animals’ skin (or as close to as possible).

“We were able to make strides and improvements in product based on material quality. Where the marketplace was using very cheap leathers to try and hit price points, we were able to differentiate by being very pure to Max’s philosophy of only using the finest raw materials.”

“The moral of the story is never buy anything labeled ‘Genuine Leather’,” says Michael. “If the manufacturer knows anything about leather and is truly using the ‘real deal’ they will be the first to mark the product “Full or Top Grain.”

Korchmar

Work with others

Korchmar are their own line, but they’ve been helping other brands realise their design mission for decades. “We make for major brands – Hartmann, Tumi, T Anthony, Coach. You learn how to improve by making for others.” Leveraging off the knowledge of other established brands has translated a lot of that practicality and good design sense into the Korchmar line.

“You learn how to improve by making for others.”

Korchmar

D to C ain’t the be-all

It’s rare today that any brand makes product from scratch. More often than not, if you buy a product you’re not buying something that the brand made, but something they sourced. “I know there’s a big move around this whole direct to customer (D to C) concept. Well that’s cool…you’re not selling through a retailer…but you’re not making it either, so you still got a middle man in there. Korchmar is as much D to C as any company, simply because we own the factory, and the people who run the company are on that factory floor, working with the people every day, trying to figure out better ways to make product.”

Korchmar

Bottom Line: Values

Max’s vision and ethic back in the day was pretty simple: Make quality products using the finest materials, produced by positively motivated people – to make people want to do beautiful work. It’s a simple formula, though hard to achieve – “especially when people are barking down your neck for profit,” adds Michael.

“Korchmar is as much D to C as any company, simply because we own the factory, and the people who run the company are on that factory floor, working with the people every day, trying to figure out better ways to make product.”

In the long run, base level values around quality are the key to longevity. “Bags that compromise quality don’t last. Simple as that. When you try to compete strictly on price, you fail in the long term. You’re headed down a very slippery slope. Those were the values instilled in me from the very beginning. It’s quality, and it’s quality through engineering: you have to design methods of making the product that make it easy for people to do well making it. There’s a hard way to do everything, and there’s an easy way. The easy way takes a lot more work upfront…but if you do it, you’ve got a good shot at having a team that can be successful and enjoy their work. The key is having your people enjoy what they are doing.”

“Bags that compromise quality don’t last. Simple as that. When you try to compete strictly on price, you fail in the long term.”

Cardamon Wallet Review :: Drive By

$
0
0

Long-time readers of this site know that one of its founding ideas was banishing the bulky wallet. The main “carry” for many of our (male) readers is the wallet and we’ve long subscribed to the idea that thinner is better, and to reduce the load as much as we can. The Cardamon team feels the same way and reached out to us, to get our thoughts on their new wallet. We were sent a few samples and I have been EDC-ing one for a few weeks.

20161122_131443

The Cardamon Wallet, currently on Kickstarter, is the culmination of three years of R&D which resulted not only in a surprisingly thin wallet, but the development of an new material called MeridianShell, which is a 300D weight Nylon-Polyester fabric that boasts waterproof and stain resistance properties. It comes in two sizes to accommodate most global currencies and measures just 3.5mm empty and 10mm when full (8 cards). The Cardamon Wallet comes in five colorways , which are all twists on your base colors. For example, the yellow is appropriately named mustard since it is a darker hue than the traditional yellow. Through the use of high-frequency welding and a heat press, they were able to construct a wallet with minimal stitching and virtually no stitching visible.

Who It Suits

cardamon_fabric_04

The Cardamon Wallet is for a user who is comfortable with distilling down their EDC, and for someone who also appreciations materials and construction. First, the wallet has some stretch to the Meridian Shell material, but Cardamon recommends a maximum of four cards per side. In my use, I’ve found I rarely need more than this, and often will carry four on one side and three on the other, leaving me some breathing room for receipts, or ticket stubs that I want to keep.

dscf2562

The branding here is very minimal with a clean font.

The material choice is excellent here, with a hand-feel similar to washed (not raw) denim. There is a slight abrasiveness to it (again, like denim), so it’s different than the soft leather wallets you may be used to. Finally, as described above, the construction is great. I cannot find any visible stitching or thread. Believe it or not, each wallet is constructed out of a single sheet of material, which is impressive to keep in mind while you inspect it.

Who It Doesn’t

If you have fast food receipts and business cards from last year in your wallet, turn away now. In the same vein, it’s not for someone who needs to carry a lot of cash or cards, because any real excess of either will cause the wallet to sit funny, and defeats the purpose.

The Good

Let’s start with the fabric Cardamon invented, the Meridian Shell poly-nylon blend. It has a great hand-feel, offers stiffness and structure, which is further backed by the cards you carry. The interior of the wallet is coated with a slightly glossy finish which I think is probably for added abrasion resistance. While comfortable holding it’s billfold shape, the Cardamon wallet also is soft and flexes when needed, contouring itself for pocket carry.

dscf2554

The colorways are vibrant and fun while maintaining a really natural look to them, the way something knit our of a natural fiber might look. The construction is top-notch and it’s not hard to believe that they spent a significant amount of time figuring out exactly how to cut then fold the Meridian Shell material to form the exact shape they were after. I could not locate any visible (or stray) stitching or glue. It’s a rare case of something that is able to look simple only as a result of so much complexity.

Finally, the branding is classy and subtle, though I would have prefer a smaller font or a graphical representation of their logo, which would have been even more discrete.

The Not So Good

20161202_214838

This is the mustard color stained with denim indigo. It’s really hard to get the color balance correct here, and this image is more exaggerated than it looks in person

Ok,  here’s where things might get a little weird. For every positive aspect of the wallet, I’ve found some niggles that balance them out. For example, the great material I was talking about? Well I used my yellow sample with a new pair of unwashed denim. Just pulling out the wallet and returning it to my rear pocket throughout the day, caused the indigo to rub off on the wallet. This is really no different than having your raw jeans dye your new white kicks, or your mom’s light colored new sofa.  Cardamon is aware of this and considers the coloration a “patina”. I am not going to fault them much on this since this type of use and wear is common with EDC items (for example, belts that age and color over time).

My second complaint is a really nit-picky one. I love how thin it is, but I feel like it could almost be too thin. I think this is just a result of expectations, meaning, if you are not used to carrying something this light, it might be strange for a bit.  When I ned to carry something compact, like a single key (say for a mailbox), I don’t feel comfortable carrying it alone. I feel like I need to attach it to something beefier like a keychain or some sort of charm, so there’s some heft to it. I don’t like the uncertainty of a small item being “lost” at the bottom of my pockets, or in the bottomless pit of a backpack messenger bag.

dscf2559

As a male who carries his wallet in a back pocket, I am constantly doing a subconscious “feel check”. During the week I carried the Cardamon Wallet, I found myself doing physical “safety checks” (just a quick tap of the pants pocket) to make sure it was there.  I’ve also found that when you put the limit (8 cards, some cash), the way the wallet sits can be changed wildly with the delta of just one item. I have an expectation that my wallet sits flat with nearly parallel lines, but without contents, the Cardamon wallet sort of bows out a little.

Also, with the two sizing options, Cardamon was able to accommodate much of the world’s currency. I have the US version and I am glad that the bills portion is large enough to fit (I hate it when it is barely large enough or too small). However, I would have liked it if it was a bit shorter. There is over an inch (1/2″ on each side) of excess space. Understandably, they may have had geometric constraints since the billfold nature of the wallet means reducing credit/ID card space when you reduce total width.

20161122_131412

Verdict

We see a lot of wallets come through these halls. Heck, I have close to two dozen sitting in a drawer at home. I want to tell you that I rotate through them every few weeks, but the truth is, wallets are a very personal item (like a pocket knife), and it’s the one of the few EDC items that I think some people keep for years. The bifold is also a very old invention and hasn’t really changed much because it is so simple. It’s hard to really improve on it, but somehow the team at Cardamon has both created something new, yet familiar. At the Kickstarter discounted prices, I think it’s a no brainer. And at full retail, I think it’s at least worthy of a look to see if this is something that you could see yourself using for years to come.
