Matsuda x Carryology “YOTS” Patch Set (CAS07)

It all started with our first official Carryology trip to Japan this past February. We were meeting with brands in Tokyo, Kyoto, Minokamo, and Yokohama. As well as hosting a Carryology meetup event at the Snow Peak Land Station shop in Tokyo and then another meetup at the end of the trip at Suburban in Hong Kong. To commemorate this trip, we set out to create some patches, which we would give out for free. Three colorways; one for the Tokyo meetup, one for the Hong Kong meetup, and one to gift to all the brands we had our scheduled meetings with.
Let’s rewind back a few months, before the design phase, all the way to the ideation phase. Sometime around November 2024, which played a major role. These patches couldn’t just be any design, there needed to be some sort of relevant inspiration for their purpose. After exploring many different motifs and concepts, we realized the timing was perfect and we landed on the direction of “the year of the snake”.
Next we called up our extremely talented dear friend and owner/designer at SAMPLE… Mr. Dan Matsuda (read more about him here). Dan’s vision and execution are always top tier, so we are always excited to work together with him time and time again. We explained the concept and he ran with it. After a few rounds of tweaks, we were all stoked with Dan’s creation. We spooled up the embroidery machines, received the patches just in time before our departure date, I packed them into my 1.5 bag travel setup, and proceeded to hand out a few hundred patches across Asia.
There was only one problem…
People loved them.
But the only way to get them was to be in-person at the meetup or have been an employee of the brands we met with. We had many emails and DMs asking where they could acquire these patches. And the answer was… well… they were all gone and it was impossible. They were intended as gifts, to be given away for free to build community.
So we got to thinking…
Let’s make them available for everyone.
But let’s refine them and make them even better.
Immediately, we decided that two patches are better than one patch… that’s just simple math.
So every CAS07 (YOTS) set will include two patches in a set.
And to really capture the detail and make them pop in 3D, we went with molded over embroidered.
Patch #1: Intended to be a visual pop when mounted to your pack.
Carryology hot orange for the prominent border, a black background, and a vivid green snake.
White for the Carryology wordmark and the snake’s eye.
Patch #2: Made for stealth pack setups, we went dark for this one.
An all black background. The snake, the border, and details are all 90% dark gray.

When we saw the concept on our screens, they looked amazing together.
A bit of play on yin and yang. Loud/bright vs subdued/dark.
But there was still something missing…
We asked the folks in the patch laboratory to see if it could work.
They hand-poured the new samples, we saw them in person and yep… now they were finished.
Both patches feature glow-in-the-dark on the Carryology wordmark and the snake’s eye.
White = green glow-in-the-dark.
Orange = orange glow-in-the-dark.
There is a limited amount of these available and once they are gone we will not be restocking them, so get your set while they last.
